Deep Vein Thrombosis During Pregnancy- Blood Clots or Strokes

It is a serious issue wherein the blood clot develops within the deep vein in the body, usually leg or brain.

If the blood clot breaks into the blood stream it can block

blood vessels in the lungs, can cause a lot of damage to organs, hemorrhage


You can consult your doctor immediately when you feel:

  • Swelling , tenderness or pain in the calf
  • Heavy aches that unable you to walk
  • Bad headaches or migraine or Vertigo
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Coughing Blood

There can be chances that you are developing DVT, it is not necessary every pregnancy woman will suffer from DVT and DVT does not have symptoms.

Chances & Causes of developing DVT post pregnancy and cannot be traced easily:

  • Blood Clot in Genes
  • Late pregnancy
  • Over Weight
  • Recent surgery
  • Fertility issues
  • High medication
  • If you are carrying twins or multiple babies
  • Smoking or Drinking excessively
  • Severe Varicose veins
  • Excessive Travel
  • Inactivity

Complexities with DVT:

Pulmonary Embolism : The most serious piece of blood clot that breaks off and enters the blood stream to your lungs and blocks the functioning of the blood vessels and cells. It can cause chest pain , heart failures, breathing difficulties, lungs collapse etc

Bad Head Aches or Ischemic strokes: When the clot happens in the brain and there is no proper passage of blood flow and oxygen to the brain and weakening of the brain tissues and it results in severe headache, high blood pressure, trouble breathing, blurry vision. If untreated can cause brain hemorrhage or damage or even death. Advisable to get MRI and brain scans done once a year to have an idea if any clotting is taking place.

Treatments for BVT:

Heparin and warfarin are 2 types of anticoagulants that are used to treat DVT. Heparin is usually prescribed first because it works immediately to prevent further clotting. After this initial treatment, you may also need to take warfarin to prevent another blood clot forming.


  • Having a balanced diet
  • Activeness
  • No smoking or drinking habits
  • Exercise- Leg exercising , meditation and Yoga
  • Have a complete body checkup once a year
